Reasons NOT to USE an Underwater Treadmill
Time to weigh the benefits and downfalls of underwater treadmill use in rehabilitation therapy.
Benefits behind the treatment:
As the field of canine rehabilitation grows, a treatment often recommended is the underwater treadmill. The idea behind this treatment is that the water provides buoyancy to support the dog while providing resistance for strengthening. The underwater treadmill can be helpful at times, but has become vastly over utilized. Any treatment modality is one small piece of the rehabilitation puzzle. The best rehabilitation plan is one that is comprehensive, addresses the dogs limitations and pain from multiple angles, and gives owners the tools to help their dogs on a day to day basis.
Downfalls behind the treatment:
There are also downfalls to using an underwater treadmill. When a dog is limping, putting them into an underwater treadmill can reinforce their abnormal gait. We should not be be building the endurance of a dog that has an abnormal gait. The cause of the abnormal gait needs to be determined and a treatment plan needs to be created to correct that abnormal gait pattern. The second downfall of the underwater treadmill is the challenge of building strength. To increase muscle strength, the tissues must be progressively loaded. Walking on a treadmill, even with water as resistance, is not enough to achieve the loading of tissues needed to increase strength. Both downfalls of underwater treadmill are addressed by following a comprehensive treatment plan including manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, soft tissue massage and laser.
REHAB TIP 01
If your dog was diagnosed with arthritis, there are things we can do to help! Addressing muscle weakness and muscle tightness in the area can help your dog have less pain and be more mobile. We can focus on strengthening weak muscles with exercises and stretching tight muscles with manual therapy techniques! This can be part of a long term management plan to keep your dog happy and doing the activities they love!
REHAB TIP 02
Rehabilitation can benefit your dog before AND after surgery! “Prehab” is very useful for decreasing swelling and increasing range of motion prior to surgery. This can help accelerate healing after surgery, giving your dog the best chance of a full recovery!
REHAB TIP 03
Did you know that front limb lameness can be challenging to diagnose and treat? Front limb issues have a history of being slow to improve and occasionally flaring up. Having a long term rehabilitation plan in place can help you catch a flare up early and know what to do to help your dog feel better!
